Ultimate Goal

Yesterday, one of our patients achieved an extraordinary accomplishment.

257 visits but it happened! His ultimate goal was to eat a steak and it happened yesterday! I was filled with emotion when he took his first bite!

You may be thinking, wow, it took him that many visits but let me tell you, this patient came to me without the ability to talk or eat due to a traumatic brain injury. He had a feeding tube (which he no longer has) and wasn’t able to communicate his needs and wants for about 4 years.

 After working together and regaining his ability to communicate I asked what is the ultimate goal of food he would like to eat. He responded with “steak” and a cold Coors Light lol (that’s coming soon as well). This moment was 2 years in the making.

To say how proud I am of him is an understatement. Next time you enjoy a good steak and a beer, remember what a gift that is, because for some, it’s an ultimate goal.
